1. Why Ironing Matters

Ironing is the most critical step in perler bead crafting. Under-iron → beads fall apart. Over-iron → holes close completely, colors deform. Master the technique for perfect results.

2. Three Ironing Styles

2.1 Full Melt

Characteristics: Beads completely fused, smooth surface with no holes.
Best for: Keychains, coasters — items needing durability and water resistance.
Method: Medium-high heat (180-190°C), iron continuously for 2-3 minutes.
Note: Colors may darken slightly; finished piece will be thinner.

2.2 Partial Melt (Most Popular in 2025)

Characteristics: Fuse one side only, keeping pixel texture on the other.
Best for: Display pieces, ornaments — preserving the iconic pixel look.
Method: Medium heat (160-170°C), iron one side 30-45 seconds. Press under weight immediately after removing from pegboard.

2.3 Light Double-Sided Melt

Characteristics: Lightly iron both sides, holes slightly closed but still visible.
Best for: Large projects needing structural integrity on both sides.
Method: Low heat (150-160°C), 20-30 seconds per side.

3. Brand Fusion Temperature Guide

BrandTemperatureTimeNotes
MARD160-175°C30-45sFuses quickly, avoid overheating
PERLER170-185°C40-60sNeeds slightly higher heat, even fusion
HAMA165-180°C35-50sModerate fusion speed
ARTKAL155-170°C25-40sLower melting point, be careful

4. Proper Ironing Technique

  1. Preheat iron: Run empty for 30 seconds for even temperature
  2. Cover with paper: Parchment paper must be flat and wrinkle-free
  3. Circular motion: Never stay in one spot; keep moving in circles
  4. Watch for changes: Stop when bead tops appear slightly translucent through the paper
  5. Press while hot: Remove paper and immediately press with a heavy book
  6. Flip and decide: After cooling, flip over, remove pegboard, decide if you want to iron the other side

5. Common Failures & Fixes

Beads not fused together

Temperature too low or time too short. Re-cover and iron again at higher heat.

Colors darkened/yellowed

Temperature too high or dirty ironing paper. Use fresh paper, lower heat. Yellowing is irreversible.

Project warped after cooling

Didn't use weight during cooling. Always press with heavy weight! Severe warping can be fixed with a hairdryer + re-pressing.

Beads stuck to iron

Paper wasn't covering properly or iron touched beads directly. Ensure complete paper coverage.
